Idled Fanling←→Sha Tau Kok Railway : Hung Leng Station!!!

(Fanling←→Sha Tau Kok Railway was built in 1911, started its service in 1912, but stopped service from 1928!!!! Hung Leng Station is the ONLY railway station still exists. But part of the railway is still left along the former Sha Tau Kok restricted area, in Tong To Village.)

Details of the idled railway and photos related (Chi version):

Location of the Idled Hung Leng Railway Station~ At the opposite side of Ko Po Village (North), just facing Sha Tau Kok Road, @ the way for Fanling.
The station is now surrounded by wire fences, we cannot go near it.

J

We took a minibus (no.52K) from Fanling terminus and got down @ Ko Po Village (Better take a bus if you are not sure where to stop).
Then we could see "Hung Leng Railway station", which was part of the idled Fanling--Sha Tau Kok Railway, now is still on Sha Tau Kok Road,
just at the opposite side of Ko Po Village (The way for Fanling). But the whole station building is now surrounded by wired fences, and nobody can enter.
So we had to enter from the catchwater, and then took photos outside the fences.
Luckily the whole station building is located inside the bushes, so even it is idled for over 80 years (Not in service since 1928!!!),
it still looks quite new. But most of the railway are already covered by bushes, or even demolished and disappeared.
Now only the part inside Sha Tau Kok Farm of Tong To Village (Near Shek Chung Au) are still in good conditions.

J

We took a bus (78K) and got down @ Lung Yeuk Tau bus-stop. Then we started our walk from Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail (North),
which ends @ Siu Hang Village.

J

Lots of Hakka style village houses along the trail.

J

Giant flowers had caught Tachibana san!!!

J

A little footpath leading to Kun Lung Wai and Siu Hang Village, near a "group" of stone houses, you may need to take a few minutes for finding out this footpath.

J

Now we were outside Kun Lung Wai, a typical Hakka walled village.
In the past, walled villages were built due to these purposes~ to group villagers together, and let them take care of each other,
and also can protect the whole village from intruders during the war time.
When the main village door is closed, nobody can go inside as the walls are high and surround all the village houses.
It was very useful during the time when there were civil wars and riots.
Walled villages are common in the rural area of HK, as most of the people living in the New Territories are Hakka people.

J

A very lovely mongrel, but a little bit shy!! This little boy asked us for some bread, and even let us pat his head!!
I really want to take him home!!

J

Now we were going to Siu Hang Village. When we walked near River Indus, we could see lots of people were playing @ the riverside.

J

A small village~~ Siu Hang Village, with a minibus terminus inside.

J

Siu Hang New Village is nearby, it looks "newer" and with lots of farmland inside.

J

We left the north part of Lung Yeuk Tau Heritage Trail and then moved to the South part, which is near the village committee office, @ Sui Wan Road.

J

A lovely bull terrier with a "silly" face, looking at my camera as it walked on the road.

J

The first stop is Wing Ning Wai, a walled village.

J

Now moving forward for Wing Ning Village.

J

A number of beautiful old village houses on the abandoned farmland.

J

Many village houses are located @ the bottom of Lung Shan hill (Dragon Hill).

J

A famous historical spot~ Lo Wai Walled village

J

Chung Ling Tang's Ancestral Hall~ In the past, all the villagers lived here belong to the Tang's family!!
Tang's family is the "Biggest" Hakka family in HK, with lots of family members living in the New Territories, from Yuen Long to Fanling.

J

Now we were @ Tin Hau Temple. It is different at the back of the temple~ a large piece of "backyard", with lots of flowers in different colours!!

J

Now we were @ Ma Wat Wai, or Ma Wat Village, a typical walled village.

J

Village committee office of Ma Wat Wai walled village.

J

A strong comparison~ High-rise buildings and farmlands!!! There are still lots of farmlands here, but farming is modernised now, you won't see any buffalos pulling the plows now.

J

Very excited as we went near and near... Shek Lo House!!! The kids in the village said that this old stone house is haunted,
and they won't go there!!! But we could see that the main entrance and another little entrance are all locked.
But we could see that the stone house is now being "wrapped" by many layers of trees and the grass is as tall as an adult.
You will need to cut all the grass if you want to go near. There may be lots of snakes inside those bushes.....
It really looks like a haunted house and we are not sure whether it is dangerous or not if we go into the forest.
So we just took some photos and left.

J

The last historical spot~ Tsung Kyam Church, which is built in 1951.
